In our daily lives, we want to keep hot coffee warm for a long time or enjoy a cold drink chilled until the very last sip. One of the core technologies that makes this wish a reality is the “Peltier Element.” The name might be unfamiliar, but Peltier elements are already close to our lives, performing the magic of precise temperature control.
What is the Peltier Effect? The Peltier effect refers to a phenomenon where, when an electric current flows through the junction of two different conductive materials (usually semiconductors), heat is absorbed on one side (becoming cold) and released on the other side (becoming hot). Discovered by French scientist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier in 1834, this phenomenon has the fascinating characteristic that cooling and heating effects can be reversed simply by changing the direction of the current.
How Does a Peltier Element Work? A Peltier element is a thermoelectric module utilizing this effect. It is manufactured by connecting numerous pairs of P-type and N-type semiconductors in series, placing conductive copper plates between them, and covering them with ceramic substrates (insulators). When DC power is supplied, heat is absorbed on one side due to electron movement, creating cooling, while heat is generated on the opposite side and released through a heat sink.
Various Applications of Peltier Elements The biggest advantages of Peltier elements are that they are eco-friendly (no refrigerants used), generate almost no noise or vibration, and can be made compact. Thanks to these features, they are used in various fields.
